Warren crossed the street, leaving the park, and couldn't seem to help the smile that had been on his lips since he'd left Sopherina's side. She wasn't as unaffected by him as she'd pretended to be at the ball. Touching her the way he had could have either gained him some footing or cost him everything. She'd been on guard in the carriage but at the park he'd seen her open for him, his name forming on her lips. Her hand on his chest had set off his pulse. In that moment, he'd felt like everything would be all right. At Wardington's house, he'd been honest when he'd said all he wanted was peace but now he wondered if he could have more from her. He didn't think they could ever go back to the people they were, and if he were being honest, he didn't want to be Lester Paddon anymore. He wanted to learn who this new Sopherina was and if he still loved her.

He might have discovered the answers to what he sought had they not been interrupted. From the tension he'd felt pouring off the man in the park, he believed it a good possibility that Michael knew about his and Sopherina's past and disapproved of them being together now. He'd all but called him lazy when he'd spoke of the ennui persona Warren had created for Society, speaking of how he traveled the world on his allowance. For any other man, a gentleman of leisure would make a fine husband but not if that man had happened to stop in Wales, pretend to be poor, marry a woman under a false name, and then go on his merry way when things looked bad.

That thought gave him pause and a possible way of making Sopherina his once and for all.

His train of thought was interrupted when something caught his eye. He paused and turned to stare down at the end of an alley and blinked just to be sure of what he was seeing. Two men in dark robes stood at the end, speaking to one another. The black robe was the costume of choice for the brothers of the Wall Party.

He sprinted down the alley, heading straight toward the men. One looked up, saw him, and ran east while the other ran west, seconds after the other. Warren followed the slower of the two, tracking him deeper into the alley, jumping over trash and other unmentionables. His heart
